SELLING ON ETSY: THE 5 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

Selling on Etsy is a job. It’s not just about posting your products. To make your products visible, to sell and make money, you will have to spend some time, if not every day, but at least a couple of times a week (this depends on your goals and the number of products you have) to improve the description and presentation of your products, to add news from your store, videos about the production process and more. Read my article if you want to know more and get the opportunity to open your store and upload the first 40 products for sale for free.

SELLING ON ETSY THE 5 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

When I had my creative bookbinding business, I sold my products through several channels, and Etsy was one of them. I want to tell you five things to keep in mind if you also want to start selling your products on Etsy.

If you are a fashion designer, photographer, or graphic designer, make something beautiful with your own hands, and want to sell materials, workshops, or downloadables. I advise you to try Etsy as an optional (or main!) sales platform.

Suppose you don’t know how to start selling on Etsy. In that case, I recommend you watch the free masterclass by Mireia Solsona, the designer and the founder of the store MimetikBcn, which has more than 12 thousand sales, called “Craft Sales Channels: how to sell your creations without budget or technical knowledge.” I’m sure you’ll find lots of tips there.

Also, Mireia has an entirely free guide, “How to sell more on Etsy.”And I also invite you to read my observations on the five things you need to keep in mind before you start selling on Etsy:

SELLING ON ETSY THE 5 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

1 Selling on Etsy = selling to the whole world.

Etsy is an international platform for selling both handmade and handcrafted products and materials for their production. By marketing on Etsy, you expose your products in front of 25 million users globally.

2 Fees you have to pay to sell on Etsy

It is free to register on Etsy. But it will cost you $0.20 to add a product for sale for four months. And then, when your product is sold, you will have to pay Etsy a 5% commission (revised in November 2021).

For this second point, I have an offer that may interest you. Suppose you don’t have a store on Etsy, but you want to try and start selling on this global marketplace, being an Etsy seller. In that case, I can offer you the possibility to register and upload 40 products for sale for FREE, without paying $0.20 per product. If you want to try it, I will leave the link here.

3 Think about the name of your store

You have to create a name for your Etsy store. You can read the best tips for choosing a name for your Etsy store in the Seller’s Handbook. But in short, as the main points, they recommend focusing on descriptive titles for your products and your brand, using your name, and making your store name easy to remember. Etsy is an international platform for selling both handmade and handcrafted products and materials for their production.

Name it and if you are not sure, ask your family, friends, or social media followers for their opinion. Before opening the store on Etsy, you can change the name as many times as you want. But remember, after you open the store to the public, you can only change the name once. After that, if you’re going to do it, you will have to contact Etsy Support.

I used MV Design Atelier’s name for my store, where MV is my initials. Before, I had another character that was more related to children’s products, but I stayed with MV Design Atelier to have the most generic name that did not depend on the products I made and sold on this platform.

4 The photos of your products

To sell on Etsy, it is essential to have good photos. Etsy is an international platform for selling both handmade and handcrafted products and materials for their production.

In the Etsy Manual, you can find many good tips on this topic. As selling online does not allow your customers to touch and look at your products up close, from my side, I advise you to have the most explicit photos possible, showing exciting and beneficial details to capture the attention of your potential customers. On my Instagram profile, I have a post on how to take photos that sell, which I also invite you to look at, which is the most popular post I have.

5 Is it complicated to sell on Etsy?

Selling on Etsy is a job. It’s not just about posting your products. To make your products visible, to trade and earn money, you will have to spend some time, if not every day, but at least a couple of times a week (this depends on your goals and the number of products you have) to improve the description and presentation of your products, to add news about your store, videos about the production process and more.

I will tell you more details about Etsy and how to sell on this platform in my next posts. I also advise you to look at this article on gananci.com that I found pretty interesting, where you can find details about how to open a store on Etsy.
