HOW MUCH DOES A YOUTUBER REALLY EARN? WE WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING

Youtubers are not all in the same boat. Some are satisfied with the Youtube remuneration, while others make agreements for product placement or partnership or sign Networks to inflate their income. The legend (relayed by some Youtube channels such as Poisson Fécond) says that on Youtube, 1,000 views = 1 euro. As the Rire Jaune video says, this is false (or true with some very closed Networks).

In reality, since the fall of the euro, Youtubers receive about 60 cents for every 1,000 videos viewed with the ads at the beginning called pre-roll (if they are at Youtube for the remuneration). Yes, these annoying videos that slow down our pleasure to consume a video allow us to finance the said videos. In addition, the ads appear randomly (ads are not automatic). This is called the fill rate on the available inventory. And Youtube is not necessarily good at this! It broadcasts so many videos that it can’t fill this inventory with pre-roll ads. On some Youtube channels, only 1 to 2 ads are displayed for every ten videos viewed (that is a fill rate of 10-20%, which is very low).

In addition, AdBlock and the company make the authors of these videos lose money. And when you know that the biggest Youtubers have a young and often geeky audience, you can expect about 40% of people to use an ad blocker!
Between the very low fill rate and the ad blockers, we find ourselves with very low CPM, especially since we must not forget that Youtube (Google) takes a commission between 40 and 50% of the CPM on each ad.

At least if they have the rights… Yes, this is another crucial point of money on Youtube: the music and video rights can upset the remuneration. If a Youtuber integrates elements on which he does not have the rights, he can give up the monetization of his video, or his money will go to the rights holder.

For those who sign with Networks, several advantages emerge. First of all, they are protected from copyright, i.e., these sponsors pay so that the Youtubers are not affected by the use of elements that they do not own the rights. On top of that, the remuneration can be higher. But (yes, there is a “but”) these Networks take 10 to 20% (or more) of the Youtubers’ income…

And that’s not all…

The amount earned comes from the withdrawal of the expenses related to the taxation. And in France, the more you earn, the higher the percentage deducted. Registered as an auto-entrepreneur, the Youtuber must set up his own status to declare his income. Why? Because the legislation is not yet defined for this sector of activity… Count about 25% as an auto-entrepreneur and much (much) more as a company!

Why do we only talk about pre-roll?

Simply because the income is important on a pre-roll… Adsense ads that are displayed during the video (often at the bottom of the video) have an ultra-low eCPM: the ad is paid only at the cost per click / CPC and varies greatly from one video to but also from one theme to another. Themes such as travel or finance will have a good CPM, but Geek channels will end up with ultra-low eCPM that we did not want to extend on this topic.

HOW MUCH DO YOUTUBERS EARN?

In an ideal world (all the rights in possession of the channel, 1 000 views = 80 cents, and no charges of Networks), the channel owners could earn a lot of money! We calculated and made a ranking of the 10 French Youtubers who would earn the most money in these conditions:

HOW MUCH DOES A YOUTUBER REALLY EARN? WE WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING
  • 10th, Le Rire Jaune with 3263 euros gross/month
  • 9th, Aypierre with 6501 euros gross/month
  • 8th, Andy with 6879 euros gross/month
  • 7th, Golden Moustache with 8071 euros gross/month
  • 6th, Fanta and Bob with 12 264 euros gross/month
  • 5th, Siphano (12 403 euros gross/month)
  • 4th, Norman (14,986 euros gross/month)
  • 3rd, Rémi Gaillard (15 510 euros gross/month)
  • 2nd, Cyprien (29 211 euros gross/month)
  • 1st, Squeezie with no less than 44 763 euros gross/month

We remind you that these calculations are totally false because they are based on conditions that do not exist in real life!

BUT IF WE PUSH THE DOORS A LITTLE FURTHER…

We talk about Youtubers but let’s talk about people who make videos… because there is not only Youtube in life, there is also, for example, Dailymotion. Let’s take the example of Rémi Gaillard, who is present on Youtube and Dailymotion. You have to know that the incomes on Dailymotion are completely different from those of Youtube and are around 5 euros per CPM (5 euros per 1000 views) if they are smoothed over the whole year (some months like January or August are bad for video advertising but others like April, May, September, November, and December are excellent)

Where does this rate come from? The pre-roll is sold on average in the 12 euros of the CPM, Dailymotion takes on average 40% of the margin, which makes 7,2 euros of the CPM… but between the filling rate which varies from one month to another (every video does not display an ad) and with the ad blockers, we quickly fall to about 5 euros of the net CPM for the videographer.
If we take only one video of Rémi Gaillard (the one with Tetris), we find ourselves with 478k views on Dailymotion, which is about 2400 euros, and more than 4 million views on Youtube, which is about 3200 euros is more than 5600 euros for a single video!

If these incomes do not exceed the maximum ceiling of the status of auto entrepreneur, he will be able to earn about 4200 euros net/video (we removed 25% of charges) but in view of his incomes, his ceiling may be quickly reached and force him to create a real production company. And there, unfortunately, the charges are much more important because it is necessary to count, on average, 60 to 70% of the incomes which go to the State (between the company tax, social charges, various charges, and income tax). He will thus end up at about 2000 euros/video! Knowing that he only makes one to two videos/month and that each video does not make such a big buzz, his income is not so huge considering the preparation time for each one and the costs that go with it!

AND EVEN FURTHER…

By digging a little deeper and having discussed with some advertising agencies that specialize in monetizing Youtubers, we realize that for some, the figures can be much larger than we think. In a rather closed environment, it is difficult to have names, but one of the biggest YouTubers confirmed to us that he earns not far from 20.000 euros/month thanks to his videos on Youtube and the sponsoring of his videos and that he seems to have a very specific and much more advantageous contract than others. Unfortunately, this is just a rumor, and we never managed to see these figures.
